I lived in Australia for 16 years. I moved back to NZ 4 years ago for family. My ah huh moment was the day I thought I can't imagine never living in the same country as my brother again! I've not regretted it. It was definitely a culture shock though!

Dentristy here is a problem if you are on a pension as it is a health need that isn't subsidized and it is expensive. That said, the health system generally is terrific and those of us who appreciate it give back by donating blood/plasma; it is not rewarded financially to disincentivise those who may not be suitable to donate and who would see it as an easy way to make a buck. I spent a day wandering around Manhattan a few months before the Twin Towers were destroyed and did not feel safe at all seeing the police toting guns everywhere.

Thankfully they agree about moving back. If one parent doesn't agree they can hold the kids in nz until the youngest is 16 and you are trapped in NZ. Thousands of mostly women are trapped in NZ because of the Hague convention rule

I also worked with an American frm New Orleans. She was married to a kiwi. We would all shake our heads at her. The Maori people of NZ are people of priviledge. So many laws and principles favour them simply because of their ancestry. If you believe you are oppressed in 2024, you are controlled by your negative beliefs. There are so many wealthy and progressive Maoris in NZ that give the lie to "oppression". It will take several generations of positive parenting to lift Maoridom out its wallowing in self pity. NZ is a land of opportunity. Just go for it! And I say this as a Maori!

I may not live in one of the developed countries (interesting side note, there are developing countries which are mostly on par with some of the most developed nations, but I have come to realize that if you are part of the global south, well, inconsequential since no mention is made), yet, how ironic since from personal experience having a family member who is a Dentist and a friend living in the UK who's family resides here and always will do dental related matters here. No reason for me to focus on political and economic related matters since many countries are experiencing problems relating to such. I will say however, the USA's national debt is 43 trillion USD, currently the global currency backed by nothing. Should that change, given that the global currency once used to be the British Pound things will get real bad real quick for the USA. The reason I will never consider immigrating to the USA is related to the sheer amount of issues going on.

I would also like to add, in addition to my other comment, for me it is about what I have to offer "in someone else's home" (so to speak). In terms of work ethic 80-100+ hours a week is nothing but a matter of course and life to me. About quality, ethics and standards. Not so much about wages but contribution. I can say, standards, ethics and quality is important to me, I can say create products predicated on these. However, I can also say, this can be verified. I am driven, motivated and I do not lack conviction. I know a concern is always when it comes to those who have other motives, not me, not married and have no children. See, I have a Master's Degree in Computing (cum laude) duel accreditation (ZA and EU), proficient regarding general support (regardless of hardware/software/networking/servers etc.) but I am far more proficient at software engineering (various languages) and have created applications relating to the Medical/Theological/Real-estate and Electrical (was the first who created the Certificate of Compliance in term of having a digital version). We had to do the same (NZ - Finland) in 2020 also due to family reasons, and let me tell you, reverse culture shock is real. 12+ years in the beautiful NZ profoundly changed us and settling back to our old home was not as easy as expected. But you are absolutely right about the different opportunities - our careers have taken such cool, new directions that we never could have imagined or hoped for! But we're still terribly missing NZ and really hoping we can return home one day. My brain is wired to daily sunshine and above freezing temperatures, so the annual 6 months of darkness, slush and snow is pretty hard to deal with :(
